Sophos Anti-Virus SBE, version 2.x: installation appears to hang

The installation of Sophos small business solutions, version 2.x, appears to hang. This can occur when you are upgrading from Sophos small business solutions, version 1, or when you are doing a fresh install.

This problem occurs because Microsoft Management Console (mmc.exe) is running. The Sophos Control Center installation wizard should instruct you to close mmc.exe, but for some versions of MSI it will not do so. The installation of Sophos small business solutions cannot continue until the Microsoft Management Console (mmc.exe) process is terminated. Follow the instructions below to end the process.

What to do

  1. On the computer where you are running the installation, go to the taskbar at the bottom of the screen and right-click an empty space.
  2. Select 'Task Manager...'
  3. On the 'Processes' tab, scroll down to mmc.exe
  4. Click 'End Process'.
