Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+: reboot requested when upgrading
When Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+ undergoes a major upgrade, it requests a reboot. A 'Restart required' dialog box opens. This displays the following message for 30 seconds:
Sophos
The changes will come into effect when you restart your computer.Your computer will continue to be protected even if you chose not to restart. If you are ready to restart, click "Restart now". Otherwise, click "Restart later" or wait for this message box to close. This message box will close automatically after 30 seconds.
Note: There is often no need to reboot immediately after installing the update.
- In many instances, Sophos
Anti-Virus will continue to update the old version with virus identity files (IDEs). - If this is not the case, the advisory for that version linked to from the knowledgebase home page will say so.
This reboot is a requirement of the Windows operating system. See 'Technical details'.
Enterprise Console will display the following error message against each computer that has been updated, but not rebooted, until the reboot has taken place:
Error 0000006d Restart needed for update to take effect
What to do
- If you want your users to see this message, you need do nothing.
- If you do not want your users to see this message, you can suppress it. The warnings will still be sent to Enterprise Console.
If some of the client computers have been rebooted and error 0000006d is still displayed, please refer to Enterprise Console: error 0000006d - alert does not clear following reboot.
Technical details
Rebooting
The Windows operating systems cannot dynamically unload and re-load filter drivers, which is why a reboot is required. When new filter drivers (e.g. for the Sophos
Error messages in Enterprise Console

Sophos Enterprise Console will report an error against each computer that has been updated, but not rebooted. It will continue to display this error until the updated computer has been rebooted.
You can check this as follows:- In the Enterprise Console, click the 'Update details' tab.
- In the 'Update Details' window, for each computer that has not yet been rebooted, you will see the message:

Error messages in the Status tab
When the 'Status' tab is selected in Enterprise Console, computers that have not been rebooted will display the word 'Error', and a yellow triangle, in the Alerts column.
To check the error- Double-click the computer name in the 'View computer details' window.
- Check the 'Sophos AutoUpdate status' section. You will see:
