Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X: error message "The archive for this package was not found"

When trying to install Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X, or Sophos Anti-Virus Small Business Edition (SBE) on a Macintosh OS X computer, the installer displays an error message:

The Installer package "Sophos Anti-Virus" cannot be opened.
The archive for this package was not found.

This happens because the file archive.pax.gz was not created when the file 'Sophos AutoUpdate.pkg' was extracted from the 'Sophos Anti-Virus.mpkg' file. As a result of this, the installer cannot complete the installation.

What to do

Force the Sophos Control Center (in SBE) or Enterprise Console to recreate the Central Installation Directory (CID).

  1. Delete the current CID from the 'Sophos' share.
  2. Force Sophos Control Center or Enterprise Console to update the CID by clicking 'Update Now'.

A new installer package should be created.

Checking the installation

How to check that the archive.pax.gz file exists:

  1. Select the file 'Sophos Anti-Virus.mpkg' and choose 'Show Package Contents'.
  2. Select Contents|Packages.
  3. Within the packages, select the file 'Sophos AutoUpdate.pkg' and choose 'Show Package Contents'.
  4. Select Contents.

The archive.pax.gz file should be in this directory.
