Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X: Sophos AutoUpdate does not work when set to 'Use system proxy settings'

With Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X, despite the user having selected 'Use system proxy settings' in the AutoUpdate 'Network Settings' options, updates are failing. This happens because AutoUpdate cannot inherit usernames and passwords from the system proxy settings.

What to do

If you must specify a username and password in order to be able to use a proxy, then you must specify that address, username and password manually. In AutoUpdate 'Network Settings', select 'Use custom proxy settings'.
