Microsoft licence implications of using Enterprise Console and EM Library
Using Sophos Endpoint Security and Control should not affect the number of Client Access Licenses (CALs) that you will need for Windows 2003 server.
You must always check the terms of your Microsoft licence and Product Use Rights. Sophos cannot provide specific advice on whether you will need to pay for CALs and, if so, how many. We can, however, provide some general guidelines on how our software works to enable you to make an assessment.
The Sophos Endpoint Security and Control network installer installs two components on a Windows server:
- Enterprise Console
- EM Library.
Enterprise Console software connects directly to Sophos remote management agent software on client computers via TCP ports 8192-4. It does not make use of any of the following services, which typically require additional CALs:
- authentication services
- file services
- print services
- remote access service.
EM Library can be used to update Central Installation Directories (CIDs) on NetWare, UNIX and Linux fileservers. Use of these CIDs will be subject to your licence agreements for those operating systems, but should not require Windows CALs. However if (as is the default) EM Library is used to update CIDs on Windows computers, this makes use of Windows file services, and you will typically need CALs to cover the number of clients that update from these CIDs.
Note: The above advice relates to installations on Windows servers. You should not use Enterprise Console on a Windows workstation to manage more than ten computers. Practical restrictions on connections will often reduce this number still further.
