Enterprise Console: how to check that the latest version of Sophos Anti-Virus is installed on your managed computers

For your Windows 2000/XP/2003, Windows NT, Windows 95/98/Me and Macintosh OS X computers to have the latest version of Sophos Anti-Virus available for scanning, the following must apply:

  • Your EM Library must contain the latest downloads from Sophos.
  • Your Central Installation Directories (CIDs) must have downloaded the latest files from the library.
  • Your computers must have automatically updated from the CIDs.

What to do

Check that EM Library is up to date

  1. Open Enterprise Console
  2. Click Tools|Manage Libraries, to open the Sophos Enterprise Manager window.
  3. In the left-hand pane, click 'EM Library'.
  4. In the right-hand pane, next to the 'Download packages' button, you can see when EM Library was last successfully updated from the Sophos databank.

If the Library is out of date, you can update it immediately by clicking 'Download packages'.

Note: It is possible to open more than one instance of EM Library. This does not affect the correct functioning of EM Library.

Check that your CID is up to date

  1. On your management server, use Windows Explorer to browse to your CID. By default, this is located in C:\Program Files\Sophos\Sophos Sweep for NT\ (The sub-folder and file names depend on which packages you download.)
  2. The available IDE files are listed in the sub-folders. Compare these with the latest IDE files available from Sophos.

If the CID is out of date:

  1. Ensure that EM Library is up to date (see above).
  2. In the Sophos Enterprise Manager window, in the left hand pane, open out the tree, click 'Central Installations'.
  3. Right-click each CID that needs updating and select 'Update CID'.

Check that computers are up to date

  1. Ensure that your CID is up to date (see above).
  2. Open the Enterprise Console.
  3. Select the group of computers you want to check. To check computers in sub-groups of this group, from the dropdown list at the top right-hand side, select 'At this level and below'.
  4. In the list of computers, look in the 'Up to date' column. If you see 'Yes', the computer is up to date. If you see a clock icon and a date, it is not.

If one or more computers are out of date, you can update them immediately by selecting them, then on the toolbar, click 'Update computers'.

To identify computers on which the anti-virus software is out of date:

  1. In the Enterprise Console window, there are two View options. Select the lower of these two (the one with a dropdown menu to the right of it, also containing an icon).
  2. Select 'Out-of-date computers'. A list of these is displayed.

You will need to perform a different procedure to check that Sophos Anti-Virus is up to date on remote and detached computers.

Check stand-alone computer is up to date

  1. In the system-tray right-click the Sophos shield
  2. Select the 'Open Sophos Anti-Virus' option.
  3. In the left-hand 'Status' pane, the third entry shows the date and time of the last update. This should be recent.
