How to configure update settings on a single computer
This article describes how to configure the update settings for a single computer. This is typically one that has had Sophos
What to do
Configuring a computer locally
Only computers that are never connected to the network are likely to need to be configured locally.
You must log on as a user who has administrator rights (if you are running Windows NT, Windows2000/XP/2003 or Mac).
- If you want computers to update from your website, you will need to publish the files on your website.
- If you need to revert to the original configuration, click the Defaults button.
Configuring Windows 2000/XP/2003, Windows NT and Windows 95/98/Me computers
- Right-click the shield icon in the system tray.
- Select 'Configure updating'.
- Select the Primary Server tab.
- Select 'Sophos' from the address dropdown list or type in the location of the installation files as a web or network address (e.g. the locations you provide could be http://www.mysite.com/sophos/ESXP or \\servername\InterChk\ESXP).
- If access to the update location is via a proxy, click 'Proxy Details' and give the relevant information.
- Click the 'Advanced...' button for advanced network options (e.g. bandwidth).
If you enter details in the Secondary Server tab, this information will be used if the primary server is unavailable.
Configuring Mac OS X
- Click the shield icon in the menu bar.
- Select 'Open Preferences...'
- Select the AutoUpdate tab.
- Using 'Network Settings' from the 'Show drop-down' list, select the Primary Server tab.
- To allow changes to the configuration, click the lock icon at the bottom of the window and enter the administrator password.
- Select one of the three update location options and enter the required information:
- 'Sophos': enter the username and password details supplied to you by Sophos.
- 'Company Web Server': enter the location of the installation files on the website in the 'URL' box (e.g. http://www.mysite.com/sophos/ESOSX).
- 'Network Location': enter the location of the installation files on your server in the 'URL' box (e.g. \\servername\InterChk\ESOSX). Give a username and password if necessary. When Sophos updates from the server, it uses these credentials to automatically mount the share during the update.
- If access to the update location is via a proxy, select the Primary Proxy tab and enter any necessary details. Click the lock icon to prevent further changes.
Configuring a computer centrally
You can configure a single computer centrally using Enterprise Console.
- If a computer is reconnected to the network after being disconnected, you should run 'Protect' as soon as possible to ensure that it is uptodate.
- You can manage it while it is on the network by using groups.
For more information, refer to the Enterprise Console User Manual. See the section 'How do I create and use groups?'
