Sophos AutoUpdate: Sophos AutoUpdate error codes

The following error codes and messages may be encountered when installing, updating or running Sophos AutoUpdate on computers running the current versions of Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+, and Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows NT/95/98/Me.

Microsoft error codes

Some Microsoft error codes may be encountered. These are among the more common ones.

0x8004000fInvalid window handleRestart the computer. Then repeat the installation or upgrade.
0x80070002The system cannot find the file specifiedCheck that the required folder can be written to by the workstation.
0x80070004The system cannot open the fileCheck the permissions on the file and on the folder it is in.
0x80070005General access denied errorCheck the rights and permissions of the account.
0x80070006Invalid handleRestart the computer. Then repeat the installation or upgrade.
0x8007000eRan out of memoryClose one or more programs and try again.
Check that your computer conforms to the system requirements.
0x80070057One or more arguments are invalid Close one or more programs and try again.
If necessary, restart the computer then try again.
0x80070070There is not enough space on the diskCheck the amount of space on the disk and that you are installing to the intended disk.
0x8007007eThe specified module could not be found Uninstall and reinstall. Check the rights and permissions of the account.

Sophos error codes

Error codeError descriptionWhat to do
8040040414Could not establish connection with the parent library. Failed to authenticate with the server. HTTP Status Code 401 (Unauthorized). VFS 0x80040414.First, check that your credentials are still valid. Second, check whether you can connect directly to the Sophos databanks using a web browser. Finally, check your firewall to see whether it is blocking updates.
80040f00Cache directory does not exist or is unreadableRun the update again. This should create or update the cache folder.
80040f01Unexpected system error (e.g. could not read from registry)Run the update again. It may be necessary to uninstall and reinstall.
80040f02Package authentication failedRun the update again. The package became corrupt during download.
80040f03Could not find the setup plug-in for the packageRun the update again. The package became corrupt during download.
8007000eOut of memory, or other system resourceCheck available memory and hard disk space. Your computer should conform to the system requirements.
8000ffffUnknown exceptionRun the update again. It may be necessary to uninstall and reinstall.
80041f00Plug-in setup failed - general non-specific errorDelete the cache folder and run the update again.
80041f01Setup timeoutThe setup program has hung, failed or taken too much time.
Check network connections and the number of licences.
80041f02Another anti-virus product is presentRemove the other anti-virus software before installation.
80041f03Could not find some files in the cache that were needed or expectedRun the update again. If necessary, delete the cache folders.
80041f05Cache file corrupt A file in the cache did not have the expected format. Run the update again. This should create or update the files in the cache folder.
80041f06A necessary registry entry was missing or malformedUninstall and reinstall.
80041f07Service errorFor example, could not contact the Sophos AutoUpdate Agent service or restart the Sophos Anti-Virus service. Check that the services have started.
80041f08Uninstalling an older Sophos product failed Check that there is no old version of Sophos Anti-Virus or Remote Update present. Uninstall it manually if necessary.
80041f09The Sophos Anti-Virus setup program or Microsoft Software Installer (MSI) program returned a non-specific errorA setup program has failed with a non-specific error. Uninstall and reinstall.
80041f0aMSI upgrade failure when installing or upgradingThis is reported when the Microsoft Software Installer has failed. Download a current version of MSI from the Microsoft website.
80041f0bMSI version errorThe windows installer service is missing, or too old. Download a current version of MSI from the Microsoft website.
80041f0cIncorrect operating systemInstallation attempted on an unsupported operating system.
80041f0dMissing dependencyAn operating system component (e.g. Internet Explorer) was missing or too old. Upgrade Internet Explorer, or any other affected component.
80041f0eInstallation failed because of lack of memoryClose one or more programs and try again.
Check that your computer conforms to the system requirements.
80041f0fInstallation ran out of disk spaceCheck the amount of space on the disk and that you are installing to the intended disk.
80041f10Installation was cancelled by the userReinstall.
80041f11Access denied (e.g. because the user has insufficient privileges)Install using an account with greater rights, e.g. local administrator.
80041f12Reboot required to complete the installationReboot the computer.
80042f00Unexpected system error (e.g. could not read from registry)Uninstall and reinstall.
80042f01The plug-in host could not be copied or startedRun the update again. If necessary, uninstall and reinstall.
80042f02Could not create, clear or set permissions on, or copy to, the temp directory.Check that there is a temp directory with available space and that the user has sufficient rights over it.
80042f03Too many concurrent installations (could not find a spare temp directory).Check to see if there is an installation already present, for temp directory space, and for rights and permissions.
80042f05A previous update is still running.Stop any update currently running, or wait for it to finish.
If this fails, reboot then attempt an update.
80041f12An installation could not run successfully because a previous installation, run by AutoUpdate on a Sophos product, required a reboot, and that reboot has not yet been done.Reboot the computer
