Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+: installation fails if another anti-virus product is present

Sophos Anti-Virus software must not be installed on a computer on which another anti-virus product is already installed. The behaviour of a computer with more than one anti-virus product installed can be unpredictable.

Note: You must always uninstall other anti-virus products before installing Sophos Anti-Virus.

What to do

The Sophos Anti-Virus installation process checks to see if other anti-virus products are already installed; it is able to detect a number of the products produced by other anti-virus companies.

  • Sophos Anti-Virus cannot recognise all anti-virus products produced by other companies.
  • If it cannot identify anti-virus software, it does not provide a warning.

If Sophos Anti-Virus identifies another anti-virus product installed on a computer:

  • It displays a warning message in the AutoUpdate log file. This is:

    "error 80041f02.
Installation could not continue for the presence of another antivirus on this computer".

  • It creates a text file called 'Sophos Anti-Virus Competitor List.txt' in the Temporary folder (along with the other installation log files). This will contain the name and version of the anti-virus product that has been detected, and the name of the registry key found.
  • It displays an Alert in Enterprise Console, but only if you tried to use Enterprise Console to install Sophos Anti-Virus remotely.
  • It displays a warning message in the AutoUpdate log file, but not in Enterprise Console if you attempted to deploy Sophos Anti-Virus using methods other than Enterprise Console.
