Reinstalling Sophos Anti-Virus on Windows XP with Service Pack 2

On a computer running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), if you use 'New Installation' to install Sophos Anti-Virus on top of an old installation with the same version number, the Windows Security Center will warn you that you do not have any anti-virus software.

  • If you reinstall the same version, the warning will be displayed.
  • If you downgrade to a previous version, the warning will be displayed.

When you install again selecting 'Upgrade existing installation', or install a later version, this warning is no longer displayed.

Note: As a result of the different behaviour of the Windows Security Center in workgroups and domains, this warning is only likely to be present for workgroups.

What to do

If you need to make a new installation, rather than upgrade an old one, uninstall Sophos Anti-Virus before performing the new installation.

If you need more information or guidance, then please contact technical support.
