Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows 2003 Service Pack 1 and IDE self-extractor file warnings

On a Windows XP computer with Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed, or a Windows 2003 computer with Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed, downloading a new IDE self-extractor (e.g. 383_ides.exe) from http://www.sophos.com/downloads/ide/ yields a security warning:

"The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?"

The publisher is listed as 'Unknown'.

This warning appears because of the stringent default security settings for Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2003 SP1.

What to do

Do one of the following:

  • Ignore the message and extract the IDE files.
  • Windows includes an unzipping program. Download and use the zipped version of the IDE files instead.
