| Vulnerability name/brief description | MS10-057 Vulnerability in Microsoft Office Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2269707) |
| CVE/CAN name | CVE-2010-2562 |
| Vendor threat level | Important |
| SophosLabs threat level | Medium |
| Solution | |
| Vendor description | This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft Office. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Excel file. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the logged-on user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights. |
| SophosLabs comments | The patch encompasses how Microsoft Excel opens specially crafted Excel spreadsheets. At worst, attacker who successfully exploits these vulnerabilities would gain the rights and privileges of the current user. The fact that these vulnerabilities were privately disclosed and that we are yet to see any malware that exploit these issues have been considered when assigning the SophosLabs threat rating of Medium, although we do recommend that users apply this patch at their earliest convenience. |
| SophosLabs testing result | N/A |
| Currently known exploits | At the time of writing SophosLabs have not observed any malware attempting to exploit this vulnerability. Should this situation change samples will be analyzed and we will take action as necessary. |
