| Vulnerability name/brief description | MS10-049 - Vulnerabilities in SChannel could allow Remote Code Execution (980436) |
| CVE/CAN name | CVE-2009-3555 CVE-2010-2566 |
| Vendor threat level | Critical |
| SophosLabs threat level | Medium |
| Solution | |
| Vendor description | This security update resolves one publicly disclosed vulnerability and one privately reported vulnerability in the Secure Channel (SChannel) security package in Windows. The more severe of these vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user visits a specially crafted Web site that is designed to exploit these vulnerabilities through an Internet Web browser. In all cases, however, an attacker would have no way to force users to visit these Web sites. Instead, an attacker would have to convince users to visit the Web site, typically by getting them to click a link in an e-mail message or in an Instant Messenger message that takes users to the attacker's Web site. |
| SophosLabs comments | The patch encompasses how Windows validates SSL responses from a server as well as implement RFC 5746 (Transport Layer Security Renegotiation Indication Extension). The patch also mediates a vulnerability where an attacker may spoof an authenticated client over a secure TLS/SSL connection. The fact that we are yet to see any malware that exploit these issues has been considered when assigning the SophosLabs threat rating of Medium, although we do recommend that users apply this patch at their earliest convenience. |

| Currently known exploits | At the time of writing SophosLabs have not observed any malware attempting to exploit this vulnerability. Should this situation change samples will be analyzed and we will take action as necessary. |
