| Vendor description | This security update resolves one publicly disclosed and four privately reported vulnerabilities in the Windows kernel-mode drivers. The most severe of these vulnerabilities could allow elevation of privilege if an attacker logs on to an affected system and runs a specially crafted application. An attacker must have valid logon credentials and be able to log on locally to exploit this vulnerability. The vulnerability could not be exploited remotely or by anonymous users. |
| SophosLabs comments | The 5 vulnerabilities resolved by this security update comprise the following: 1. CVE-2010-1887 - This is a denial of service vulnerability and it exists due to Windows kernel-mode drivers improperly validating an argument that was passed to a system call. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by running a specially crafted application causing the system to become unresponsive and automatically restart. In order to exploit this vulnerablity, the attacker must have valid logon credentials and must have local access to the targetted system. 2. CVE-2010-1894 - This is an elevation of privilege vulnerability and it exists due to the way the Windows kernel-mode drivers handle some exceptions. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run arbitrary code in kernel mode. This vulnerability cannot be exploited remotely and the attacker must have local access rights to the targetted system. 3. CVE-2010-1895 - This is another elevation of privilege vulnerability. This vulnerability exists due to Windows kernel-mode drivers improperly allocating memory when making a copy from user mode. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run arbitrary code in kernel mode. This vulnerability cannot be exploited remotely and the attacker must have local access rights to the targetted system. 4. CVE-2010-1896 - This is also another elevation of privilege vulnerability. It exists in Windows kernel-mode drivers due to improper validation of input passed from user mode. As this vulnerability cannot be exploited by a remote attack, the attack must be granted local access rights to the targetted system. 5. CVE-2010-1897 - This last vulnerability is also another elevation of privilege vulnerability. The vulnerability exists due to improper parameter validation when Windows kernel-mode drivers are creating a new window. While an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run arbitrary code, its effect is mitigated because it cannot be exploited remotely. |
