MS10-043 - Vulnerability in Canonical Display Driver Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2032276) |
| CVE/CAN name | CVE-2009-3678 |
| Vendor threat level | Critical |
| SophosLabs threat level | Medium |
| Solution | |
| Vendor description | This security update resolves a publicly disclosed vulnerability in the Canonical Display Driver (cdd.dll). Although it is possible that the vulnerability could allow code execution, successful code execution is unlikely due to memory randomization. In most scenarios, it is much more likely that an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could cause the affected system to stop responding and automatically restart. This vulnerability depends on Windows Aero theme being enabled. |
| SophosLabs comments | This update corrects the way Windows parses data that has been copied from user mode to Kernel mode. An attack could occur when the user views a malicious image file that exploits this vulnerability with an application that uses APIs for GDI (Windows Graphical Device Interface). Because this vulnerability is mitigated by memory randomization and only occurs if the Windows Aero theme is enabled, SophosLabs have assigned this update a threat level of Medium but recommend users to apply this update at their earliest convenience. |
| SophosLabs testing result | N/A |
| Currently known exploits | At the time of writing SophosLabs have not observed any malware attempting to exploit this vulnerability. Should this situation change samples will be analyzed and we will take action as necessary. |
| First sample seen | N/A |
