Solution

MS10-041

Vendor description This security update resolves a publicly disclosed vulnerability in Microsoft .NET Framework. The vulnerability could allow data tampering of signed XML content without being detected. In custom applications, the security impact depends on how the signed content is used in the specific application. Scenarios in which signed XML messages are transmitted over a secure channel (such as SSL) are not affected by this vulnerability.
SophosLabs comments This update resolves a publicly disclosed flaw in the Microsoft .Net framework that could allow an attacker to alter signed XML content. Signed XML transmitted via secure channels ( like those protected by SSL ) are not at risk of being exploited via this vulnerability. The extent at which this jeopardizes the security of an application will depend on how a .Net based application utilizes signed XML. Examples of worst case scenarios would include; where signed XML content would be used to assign user credentials or transmit executable code, though these scenarios are not likely to be common.
