MS10-033 - Vulnerabilities in Media Decompression Could Allow Remote Code Execution (979902) |
| CVE/CAN name | CVE-2010-1879 CVE-2010-1880 |
| Vendor threat level | Critical |
| SophosLabs threat level | Medium |
| Solution | |
| Vendor description | This security update resolves two privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows. These vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted media file or receives specially crafted streaming content from a Web site or any application that delivers Web content. An attacker who successfully exploited these vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights. |
| SophosLabs comments | Media files are common targets for exploitation due to their increased potential for circulation via social groups. There is a high possibility that malware authors will look to exploit these vulnerabilities and users are advised to install this update at their earliest convenience. The fact that these vulnerabilities have not been publicly disclosed, and that we are yet to see any malware that exploit these issues have been considered when assigning the SophosLabs threat rating of Medium. |
| SophosLabs testing result | N/A |
| Currently known exploits | At the time of writing SophosLabs have not observed any malware attempting to exploit this vulnerability. Should this situation change samples will be analyzed and we will take action as necessary. |
