MS10-030 - Vulnerability in Outlook Express and Windows Mail Could Allow Remote Code Execution (978542) |
| CVE/CAN name | CVE-2010-0816 |
| Vendor threat level | Critical |
| SophosLabs threat level | Medium |
| Solution | |
| Vendor description | This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and Windows Live Mail. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user visits a malicious e-mail server. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights. |
| SophosLabs comments | In order to exploit this vulnerability an attacker would need to convince his victim to connect to a malicious email server which, although possible through social engineering or targetted attacks, is not as easy as simply opening an infected email attachment. With this in mind, as well as the fact that a patch is now available and no known attacks have been reported, Sophos has classified this threat as medium risk. |
| SophosLabs testing result | N/A |
| Currently known exploits | At the time of writing SophosLabs have not observed any malware attempting to exploit this vulnerability. Should this situation change samples will be analyzed and we will take action as necessary. |
