MS10-028 - Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Visio Could Allow Remote Code Execution (980094) |
| CVE/CAN name | CVE-2010-0254 CVE-2010-0256 |
| Vendor threat level | Important |
| SophosLabs threat level | Low |
| Solution | MS10-028 |
| Vendor description | This security update resolves two privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Visio. The vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Visio file. An attacker who successfully exploited these vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights. The security update addresses these vulnerabilities by correcting the way that Microsoft Office Visio validates attributes and calculates indexes when opening specially crafted Visio files. |
| SophosLabs comments | The two privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Visio are remote code execution vulnerabilities and both vulnerabilities are related to issues involving memory handling when opening specially crafted Visio files. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run arbitrary code as the logged-on user. However, as Microsoft Office Visio is not widely used in comparison with other Microsoft Office applications like Microsoft Office Word, the impact due to exploiting this vulnerability is not expected to be widespread. As a result, Sophos has classified this threat as low risk. |
