Sophos Anti-Virus SBE: Virus identity files

Virus identity (IDE) files are files which give Sophos Anti-Virus Small Business Edition (SBE) the information necessary to detect and disinfect the latest viruses and other malicious software.

• IDE files are written using Sophos's proprietary Virus Description Language (VDL). They consist of printable ASCII characters.
• IDE files are cross-platform. All different operating system versions of Sophos Anti-Virus can use the same IDE file.
• Sophos Anti-Virus SBE is automatically updated with IDE files as soon as they are released.

You can check to see which IDE files have been loaded.

What to do

• Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003 computers, IDE files loaded are listed in 'Product Information'.
  • Right-click the Sophos shield icon, in the system tray on the bottom right of your screen, and select 'Open Sophos Anti-Virus'.
  • In the 'Help and Information' panel, click 'View product information'.
• Windows 98 and Windows Me, IDE files loaded are listed in the Sophos log (by default C:\Program Files\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Virus\SWEEP.LOG)
