MS10-008 - Cumulative Security Update of ActiveX Kill Bits (978262) |
| CVE/CAN name | CVE-2010-0252 |
| Vendor threat level | Critical |
| SophosLabs threat level | Medium |
| Solution | |
| Vendor description | The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user views a specially crafted Web page that instantiates an ActiveX control with Internet Explorer. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights. This update also includes kill bits for four third-party ActiveX controls. The security update addresses the vulnerability by setting a kill bit so that the vulnerable control does not run in Internet Explorer. |
| SophosLabs comments | This remote code execution vulnerability exists in the Microsoft Data Analyzer ActiveX Control. A remote intruder can successfully exploit this vulnerability by hosting a Web site that accepts user provided content. If the user visiting this Web site has administrative rights access, the remote intruder can potentially gain access and take complete control of the affected system. Otherwise, the remote intruder could gain the same access rights as the local user. Another way a remote intruder can exploit this vulnerability is to send a link to the Web site hosting the vulnerability exploit and asking the recipient to visit the Web site. A malicious Web site cannot exploit this vulnerability on systems where Microsoft Data Analyzer is not previously installed. |

| Currently known exploits | At the time of writing SophosLabs have not observed any malware attempting to exploit this vulnerability. Should this situation change samples will be analyzed and we will take action as necessary. |
