Solution

MS10-004

Vendor description This security update resolves six privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office PowerPoint. The vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted PowerPoint file. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.
SophosLabs comments As with CVE-2010-0250 which was also patched this month, these vulnerabilities are classic targets for malware authors to try to exploit. Users should remain vigilant and treat email attachments from unknown sources with suspicion. Fortunately the vulnerabilities addressed in this update have not been publicly disclosed and SophosLabs is unaware of any in-the-wild exploits. For these reasons SophosLabs have classified these vulnerabilities as medium level threats.
SophosLabs testing result N/A
Currently known exploits At the time of writing SophosLabs have not observed any malware attempting to exploit this vulnerability. Should this situation change samples will be analyzed and we will take action as necessary.
