Vendor description Microsoft is investigating a publicly reported vulnerability in Internet Explorer for customers running Windows XP or who have disabled Internet Explorer Protected Mode. This advisory contains information about which versions of Internet Explorer are vulnerable as well as workarounds and mitigations for this issue.

Our investigation so far has shown that if a user is using a version of Internet Explorer that is not running in Protected Mode an attacker may be able to access files with an already known filename and location.
SophosLabs comments This vulnerability can be used to expose sensitive data to both local and remote attackers by bypassing the security zone restrictions enforced by vulnerable browsers. The most obvious target for this type of attack is the index.dat file which could be used to harvest cookie information and other cached data. In the absence of any remedial patch from the vendor SophosLabs has assigned this vulnerability a threat level of high.
SophosLabs testing result N/A
Currently known exploits At the time of writing SophosLabs have not observed any malware attempting to exploit this vulnerability. Should this situation change samples will be analyzed and we will take action as necessary.
