Sophos Anti-Virus SBE: enabling extensive scan mode

By default, Sophos Anti-Virus Small Business Edition (SBE) performs a 'Normal' scan which checks those parts of each file that are likely to contain viruses. Extensive scanning examines the complete contents of each file. It is significantly slower than normal scanning.

In general, you should rarely need to use extensive scanning, and only on advice from Sophos technical support.

However, to detect certain viruses, you may be told to have extensive scanning enabled.

What to do

Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003

You must enable extensive scanning separately for immediate, scheduled and on-access mode.

In 'Immediate' mode:

  • Go to Start|Programs|Sophos|Sophos Anti-Virus and run the Sophos Anti-Virus program.
  • Select 'Configure Sophos Anti-virus'
  • Select 'Right-click scanning'
  • On the 'Scanning' tab, set 'Scanning level' to 'Extensive'.
  • Click 'OK'.

Windows 98 and Windows Me

You must enable extensive scanning separately for immediate, scheduled and on-access mode.

In 'Immediate' mode:

  • Go to Start|Programs|Sophos Anti-Virus and run the Sophos Anti-Virus program.
  • Ensure that the Immediate mode tab is selected.
  • Go to Options|Configuration and under the Mode tab, set 'Scanning level' as 'Extensive'.
  • Click 'OK'.
