Sophos Anti-Virus for DOS/Windows 3.1x takes a long time to check my hard disk. What can I do about it?

Scanning a hard disk can be made faster in a number of ways:

Use the default settings for Sophos Anti-Virus. This performs a 'Quick' scan of 'Executable' files and doesn't scan statically compressed archives.
Load HIMEM.SYS from CONFIG.SYS. This makes the computer's upper memory available to DOS programs such as SWEEP.
Load SMARTDRV.EXE from AUTOEXEC.BAT. Do not use this on clean boot disks as it may load virus fragments from the cache back into memory, and if Sophos Anti-Virus detects a virus in memory it will not attempt disinfection.
