Creating a Windows 95/98/Me startup disk

A startup disk is useful for clean booting an infected computer to rid it of a virus. You can create a startup disk in Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows Me. The startup disk can only be used on the computer it was created on, or on a very similar computer. You can only create a DOS system disk on Windows 95 and Windows 98, but the disk will work on a greater range of computers.

What to do

To create a Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows Me startup disk:

  • Get a blank, formatted, 3.5 inch floppy disk.
  • At the taskbar, select Start|Settings|Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs.
(In Windows 95, click on 'Properties'.) Select the Startup Disk tab.
  • Create your startup disk. Write-protect it and store it safely.

DOS system disk:

  • Alternatively, create a boot disk under MS-DOS in Windows 95/98. As there are differences between Windows 95, OSR2 and Windows 98, separate disks will be needed for each.
