W32/Spybot-EK is a worm and IRC backdoor Trojan for the Windows platform.

W32/Spybot-EK spreads:

- to other network computers infected with: Troj/Kuang and Troj/NetDevil
- to other network computers by exploiting common buffer overflow vulnerabilities, including RPC-DCOM (MS04-012)
- by copying itself to network shares protected by weak passwords

W32/Spybot-EK runs continuously in the background, providing a backdoor server which allows a remote intruder to gain access and control over the computer via IRC channels.

When first run W32/Spybot-EK copies itself to <System>\odbc32.exe.

The following registry entries are created to run odbc32.exe on startup:

The following registry entry is changed to run odbc32.exe on startup:

(the default value for this registry entry is "Explorer.exe" which causes the Microsoft file <Windows>\Explorer.exe to be run on startup).
