Action

Please follow the instructions for removing worms.

Check your administrator passwords and review network security.

You will also need to edit the following registry entries, if they are present. Please read the warning about editing the registry.

At the taskbar, click Start|Run. Type 'Regedit' and press Return. The registry editor opens.

Before you edit the registry, you should make a backup. On the 'Registry' menu, click 'Export Registry File'. In the 'Export range' panel, click 'All', then save your registry as Backup.

Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE entries:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
Microsoft Windows Runtime DLL Services
= C:\<Windows system>\WINDEV.EXE

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\
Microsoft Windows Runtime DLL Services
= C:\<Windows system>\WINDEV.EXE

and delete them if they exist.

Close the registry editor.

More Information

W32/Randex-M is a worm which attempts to spread by copying itself to ADMIN$ and C$ network shares with weak passwords. The worm also runs in the background as a service process and allows unauthorised remote access to the computer via IRC channels.

The worm copies itself to the Windows system folder as WINDEV.EXE and adds the following entries to the registry to run itself on system restart:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
Microsoft Windows Runtime DLL Services
= C:\<Windows system>\WINDEV.EXE

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\
Microsoft Windows Runtime DLL Services
= C:\<Windows system>\WINDEV.EXE

W32/Randex-M generates random IP addresses and attempts to connect to the remote computer using one of the following passwords:
