Windows NT/2000/XP/2003
In Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 you will also need to edit the following registry entry. The removal of this entry is optional in Windows 95/98/Me. Please read the warning about editing the registry.
At the taskbar, click Start|Run. Type 'Regedit' and press Return. The registry editor opens.
Before you edit the registry, you should make a backup. On the 'Registry' menu, click 'Export Registry File'. In the 'Export range' panel, click 'All', then save your registry as Backup.
Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE entry:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
WinMessenger
<Windows folder>\syshost.exe
and delete it if it exists.
Close the registry editor.
More Information
W32/Opanki-E is a worm with backdoor functionality for the Windows platform.
W32/Opanki-E runs continuously in the background, providing a backdoor server which allows a remote intruder to gain access and control over the computer via IRC channels. W32/Opanki-E attempts to connect to ftpd.there3d.com, if the worm succeeds, it gives unauthorized access to a remote attacker. The predefined message can be sent to people on the compromised computer's Buddy List. The following is the message:
hehe :) I found <a>this<\a> funny movie
The 'this' contains a URL linking to a copy of worm.
When first run W32/Opanki-E copies itself to <Windows folder>\syshost.exe.
The following registry entry is created to run syshost.exe on startup:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
WinMessenger
<Windows folder>\syshost.exe
The following registry entry is set:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
