W32/Kassbot-P is a worm and IRC backdoor Trojan for the Windows platform.
W32/Kassbot-P runs continuously in the background, providing a backdoor server which allows a remote intruder to gain access and control over the computer via IRC channels.
W32/Kassbot-P spreads to other network computers by:
- exploiting common buffer overflow vulnerabilities, including: LSASS (MS04-011), RPC-DCOM (MS04-012), WKS (MS03-049) (CAN-2003-0812), PNP (MS05-039) and ASN.1 (MS04-007)
- copying itself to network shares protected by weak passwords
- via AOL Instant Messenger
W32/Kassbot-P includes functionality to:
- perform DDoS attacks
- terminates security and anti-virus related processes
- downloads code from the internet
- perform port scanning
When first run W32/Kassbot-P copies itself to <Windows>\win32dll.exe.
The file win32dll.exe is registered as a new system driver service named "winconfig.exe", with a display name of "winconfig.exe" and a startup type of automatic, so that it is started automatically during system startup. Registry entries are created under:
