Action

Please follow the instructions for disinfecting PE executables.

Windows NT/2000/XP/2003

In Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 you will also need to edit the following registry entry for each user who ran the virus. The removal of this entry is optional in Windows 95/98/Me. Please read the warning about editing the registry.

At the taskbar, click Start|Run. Type 'Regedit' and press Return. The registry editor opens.

Before you edit the registry, you should make a backup. On the 'Registry' menu, click 'Export Registry File'. In the 'Export Range' panel, click 'All', then save your registry as Backup.

Each user has a registry area named HKEY_USERS\[code number indicating user]\. For each user locate the entry:

HKCU\[code number]\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\
RUN = "C:\\WINDOWS\\Rundllw32.exe"

and delete it if it exists.

Close the registry editor.

Editing Win.ini

At the taskbar, click Start|Run and type Sysedit. Bring Win.ini to the front. In the [windows] section, search for a line beginning with 'Run=' and delete any references to the files you removed. Delete only that reference, not any other text.

Reboot your computer.

More Information

W32/Gift-B is a mass mailing worm.

When first executed W32/Gift-B displays the fake error message
"File data corrupt:
probably due to bad data transmission or bad disk access."

W32/Gift-B then makes a copy of itself in /windows/Rundllw32.exe and creates the
registry entry

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\
RUN = "C:\\WINDOWS\\Rundllw32.exe".

The worm also sets the related run key in WIN.INI in older Windows version.

When the worm is executed on startup, it scans for email
addresses in .ht* and *.asp files from My Documents and the current folder.

W32/Gift-B is capable of sending emails through MAPI.
The following are a few examples of the large list of email it sends
(note that this list might be modified in different versions):

Subject line: Improve your site
Attached file: js.exe
Message text: Your page is nice. Test this js scripts
and tell me what do you think.

Subject line: <null>
Attached file: Setup.exe
Message text: Hello, Take a look to this little app!

Subject line: IE5 security patch
Attached file: Ie5Patch.exe
Message text: This is the security patch you asked for...
i don't know if is the last version but works.

On the 5th of every month, W32/Gift-B displays the message

"I-Worm.RunDllw32 Activated
This is a I-Worm coded by Bumblebee.\29a!
Gretingz to all 29a members :)"
