Windows NT/2000/XP/2003

In Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 you will also need to edit the following registry entry. The removal of this entry is optional in Windows 95/98/Me. Please read the warning about editing the registry.

At the taskbar, click Start|Run. Type 'Regedit' and press Return. The registry editor opens.

Before you edit the registry, you should make a backup. On the 'Registry' menu, click 'Export Registry File'. In the 'Export range' panel, click 'All', then save your registry as Backup.

Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE entry:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Sav32
C:\recycled\<worm filename>

and delete it if it exists.

Close the registry editor.

W32/Famus-G is a mass-mailing worm.

W32/Famus-G spreads by sending email messages with itself as an attachment. Email addresses are obtained from the infected machine.

Emails are sent with subject "Britney Spears Vs Madonna" and contain the following message text:

"what did it really happen between Britney Spiers and Madonna?
Why did they fight?
Do you realy want to know? see this picture taked out of the video click.

Que pasó realmente entre Britney y Madonna?
Por qué pelearon?
De verdad quieres saberlo? Mira estas imagens tomadas fuera del video click."

Email messages contain the worm as an attachment with an SCR extension. In addition, an image file J.JPG is attached which contains the text "Password: abc".

W32/Famus-G also sends an email to a predefined address, giving details of the infected system.

W32/Famus-G may display a message box containing the text "File corrupted or bad format".

When first run, W32/Famus-G copies itself to the Windows system folder. In the same folder, the worm also drops a malicious component as SISTEMINFO.EXE and a clean file as SMTP.OCX.

W32/Famus-G may create a registry entry such as the following, in an attempt to run itself on system startup:
