In Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 you will also need to edit the following registry entry. The removal of this entry is optional in Windows 95/98/Me. Please read the warning about editing the registry.

At the taskbar, click Start|Run. Type 'Regedit' and press Return. The registry editor opens.

Before you edit the registry, you should make a backup. On the 'Registry' menu, click 'Export Registry File'. In the 'Export range' panel, click 'All', then save your registry as Backup.

Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE entry:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
Poet = <WINDOWS>\system32\Inf\poet.exe

and delete it if it exists.

Close the registry editor.

More Information

W32/Doep-A is a peer-to-peer network worm which copies itself to the following location:

<WINDOWS>\system32\Inf\poet.exe

and creates the following registry entry to ensure it gets run at system logon:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
Poet = <WINDOWS>\system32\Inf\poet.exe

W32/Doep-A will create many ZIP compressed copies of itself and delete registry entries. W32/Doep-A is a peer-to-peer network worm.

When first run W32/Doep-A copies itself to the following location:

<WINDOWS>\system32\Inf\poet.exe

and creates the following registry entry to ensure it gets run at system logon:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
Poet = <WINDOWS>\system32\Inf\poet.exe

W32/Doep-A also creates ZIP compressed copies of itself in the following folder:

<WINDOWS>\system32\Inf

These ZIP compressed copies of the worm have names that are generated randomly using name lists. The ZIP files may also contain a text file or a file with an AVI extension. These files are generated by the worm and added to the ZIP archive along with a copy of the worm.

W32/Doep-A will change the default share folder of various peer-to-peer applications to the following folder:

<WINDOWS>\system32\Inf

For example, the worm changes the default KaZaA share folder by modifying the following registry entry:

HKCU\Software\Kazaa\LocalContent\
Dir0 = 012345:<WINDOWS>\system32\Inf

W32/Doep-A will delete the following registry entries:

W32/Doep-A creates the file poet.log in the <WINDOWS>\system32 folder and the file readme.txt in the <WINDOWS>\system32\Inf folder. These files are not malicious and can be deleted.
