More Information

W32/Codbot-W is a network worm and backdoor Trojan which allows a remote intruder to gain access and control over the computer.

W32/Codbot-W can spread to weakly protected Microsoft SQL servers, and computers vulnerable to the RPC-DCOM (MS04-012), LSASS (MS04-011), PnP (MS05-039) and IMAIL exploits.

When first run W32/Codbot-W copies itself to <System>\Perfhmon.exe.

The worm may create the following file:

<Temp>\terminate.bat - this may be deleted.

The file Perfhmon.exe is registered as a new system driver service named "Perfhmon", with a display name of "Performance Logs" and a startup type of automatic, so that it is started automatically during system startup.

Registry entries are created under:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Perfhmon\
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\Perfhmon\
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Network\Perfhmon\

The following patches for the operating system vulnerabilities exploited by W32/Codbot-W can be obtained from the Microsoft website:

MS05-039
MS04-012
MS04-011
