More Information

W32/Chode-H is an instant messenger worm with IRC backdoor functionality for the Windows platform that spreads by sending itself to IM contacts using MSN and AOL's instant messenger.

When first run W32/Chode-H copies itself to <System>\<random folder>\svshost.exe and creates the file <Temp>\temp.bat.

In order to be able to run automatically when Windows starts up the worm sets the registry entries:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
svshost
<System>\<random folder>\\svshost.exe

Once executed W32/Chode-H displays a fake error message titled "Error loading config" with the message "Config file not found".

W32/Chode-H terminates a number of processes including those related to various AV and security applications.

W32/Chode-H includes functionality to modify the HOSTS file.

W32/Chode-H modifies the HOSTS file, mapping the URLs of selected anti-virus and security related websites to the loopback address 127.0.0.1, in an attempt to prevent access to these sites. The new HOSTS file will typically contain the following:
