W32/Assiral-C

Please follow the instructions for removing worms.

W32/Assiral-C is an email worm with viral functionality.

In order to run automatically at startup the worm copies itself to the files L4r1$$a.pif and Service.pif in the Windows system folder and to ISASS32.pif in the Windows folder and sets the following registry entries pointing to these files:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\L4r1$$a
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\LSASS 32
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Service.

In addition the worm copies itself to the file MSLARISSA.pif in the Windows folder and adda a run entry to the Windows section of the Win.ini file.

On Windows NT/XP/2000 and newer systems this entry is mapped to the registry using the file mapping defined in

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping.

The worm creates the file C:\BROPIA_IS_LAMER.TXT containing an insulting message to the author of the Bropia worm.

W32/Assiral-C also copies itself to all attached drives as the file MS_larissa.pif.

The worm then checks the system time and initiates a system shutdown if the current day is a Saturday. During the shutdown the following message is displayed:

Sorry, This computer is restricted today!
LARISSA aka "ASSIRAL" allows only 1 min. of computer use during this day!

On Wednesdays the worm replaces the title of the foreground window with an insulting message to the Bropia worm author.

When the worm is first executed it displays a fake error message box with the text

Invalid memory block.

The worm depends on two DLL libraries which are not normally found on standard Windows system. Therefore the worm will normally not execute but an error message will be displayed by the operating system.

The worm attempts to download and execute the file FixSflog.exe from the Symantec website using Internet Explorer.

W32/Assiral-C harvests email addresses by recursively searching for and parsing files with the extensions HT*, ASP, PH*, TX*, PL*, SHTM*. The worm searches the Windows folder and the directory retrieved from the registry entry

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Shell Folders\Personal.
