Windows NT/2000/XP/2003

In Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 you will also need to edit the following registry entry for each user who ran the virus. The removal of this entry is optional in Windows 95/98/Me. Please read the warning about editing the registry.

At the taskbar, click Start|Run. Type 'Regedit' and press Return. The registry editor opens.

Before you edit the registry, you should make a backup. On the 'Registry' menu, click 'Export Registry File'. In the 'Export Range' panel, click 'All', then save your registry as Backup.

Each user has a registry area named HKEY_USERS\[code number indicating user]\. For each user locate the entry:

HKU\[code number]\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
<base filename of Trojan> manager
<Windows>\<filename of Trojan>

and delete it if it exists.

Close the registry editor.

Troj/Spexta-A is a Trojan for the Windows platform.

Troj/Spexta-A may be used to send out spam emails to addresses harvested from the infected system. The Trojan may also download and run further malicious code.

Troj/Spexta-A may arrive as an email attachment in emails claiming to be from "CNN Newsletter" with subject line "TERROR HITS LONDON". The Trojan is included as an attachment with filename "LondonTerrorMovie.zip". Troj/Spexta-A is a Trojan for the Windows platform.

When first run Troj/Spexta-A copies itself to the Windows folder under one of the following filenames:

inetinfomon.exe
MPM.exe
service.exe
winlog.exe

The Trojan creates a registry entry to run itself on startup, chosen corresponding to the filename above:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
<base filename of Trojan> manager
<Windows>\<filename of Trojan>

For example, if the Trojan uses the filename MPM.exe, the registry entry is given the name "mpm manager".
