There are versions of Sophos Anti-Virus available for a wide range of platforms, including all versions of Windows, Mac OS X, many UNIX and Linux variants, Netware, Mac OS8 and OS9, OpenVMS, OS/2 and DOS. EM Library is used to download and update Sophos Anti-Virus automatically on nearly all these platforms. It allows for deployment across a wide area network with multiple updating locations. Sophos Enterprise Console is a new management console that can be used to deploy Sophos Anti-Virus remotely, and to configure, monitor, manage and report on Sophos Anti-Virus running on Windows and Mac OS X computers. It works with the new versions of Sophos Anti-Virus on these platforms. These release notes give details of new features and known issues for each of these applications. For information on upgrading to the new products, see: www.sophos.com/products/es/upgrade/ 2 New features -------------- 2.1 Sophos Enterprise Console 1.0 * Manages the new versions of Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000/XP/2003, Windows NT, Windows 95/98/Me and Mac OS X. * Maintains a database of all managed computers, whether they are currently connected or not. * Relies only on TCP/IP and DNS being available across the managed network. * Can be used to define and apply configuration policies to groups of computers. * Can be used to manage by exception: Enterprise Console provides filtered views of computers that have problems and need action, and enables investigation of those problems. * Offers integrated reporting: you can view alerts and create reports on virus finds. 2.2 Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000/XP/2003 5.0 * New user security model. Only users in the SophosAdministrators group can change settings. * Intuitive, task-oriented user interface with a Windows XP look and feel. * Improved disinfection. You can deal with infected files via a Quarantine Manager, without needing to rescan them. * You can scan items from a right-click menu in Windows Explorer. * Includes Sophos AutoUpdate, which enables background updating from primary and secondary locations, via WAN or internet (including direct updating from Sophos). 2.3 Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 95/98/Me 4.5 * Can be managed by Sophos Enterprise Console. * Includes Sophos AutoUpdate, which enables background updating from primary and secondary locations, via WAN or internet. 2.4 Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows NT 4.5 * Can be managed by Sophos Enterprise Console. * Includes Sophos AutoUpdate, which enables background updating from primary and secondary locations, via WAN or internet. 2.5 Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X 4.5 * Can be managed by Sophos Enterprise Console. * Includes Sophos AutoUpdate, which enables background updating from primary and secondary locations, via WAN or internet. 3 Known issues -------------- 3.1 Installation * The Enterprise Console management server will not work correctly if installed in a VMWare session. * Enterprise Console management server installation will fail if there is no Microsoft networking client installed on the computer (although this client does not need to be active). * If you are using a firewall, you must enable Corba port 8192, in addition to ports 8193 and 8194. Port 8192 is used to enable the client computers to find the management server. 3.2 Sophos Enterprise Console 1.0 and EM Library 1.2 * Enterprise Console may be unable to manage Sophos Anti-Virus on computers that are running VMWare. However, Sophos Anti-Virus should continue to protect these computers, and should be updated automatically. For information on how to ensure that such computers are managed, refer to http://www.sophos.com/support/ * If you view or edit the anti-virus policy ("SAV policy") of a group and then click "OK", Enterprise Console checks each computer in the group to see that it complies with the group policy. If there are a large number of computers in the group, this can take several minutes and the computer may become unresponsive. If you view the policy without making any changes, you can click "Cancel" to avoid this checking. * If you move computers from one group into another, Enterprise Console checks the anti-virus policy ("SAV policy") of each computer to compare it with the group policy. If you are moving a large number of computers, this can take several minutes and the computer may become unresponsive. * When you specify an anti-virus policy ("SAV policy") for a group of computers, you can set up email alerting for "Virus alerts", "Scanning errors" or "Other errors". Mac OS X computers do not support the "Scanning errors" option. If you select this option only, they will not send any alerts. * When you set an anti-virus policy ("SAV policy") for a group of computers, you can exclude folders from on-access scanning. This option is not supported on Windows 95/98/Me computers and may have the effect of disabling on-access scanning on those computers. If you move the Windows 95/98/Me computers to a group that does not have this option included in its policy, on-access scanning should restart. 3.3 Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000/XP/2003 * If SAV32CLI, the command-line version of Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows NT/2000/XP/2003, is being run when an upgrade from Sophos Anti-Virus 3.xx to Sophos Anti-Virus 5 begins, the upgrade will fail. Ensure that SAV32CLI is not running during an upgrade. * On Windows 2000 computers where the Microsoft network client for Windows has been removed and replaced by the Novell client for Netware, the Sophos icon (blue shield) does not appear in the system tray. Desktop alerts are not displayed either. This can be resolved by installing and then disabling the Microsoft network client. * The setup program may not correctly identify the latest versions of other anti-virus software, which may conflict with Sophos Anti-Virus. 3.4 Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 95/98/Me 4.5 * On Windows 95, if you run 'Sweep95 -auto' to force a scan on a workstation, Enterprise Console can incorrectly report that on-access scanning is "Inactive". To correct this error, in Enterprise Console, select the computer(s), right-click and select "Comply with|Group anti-virus policy". * When you use Enterprise Console to set an anti-virus policy ("SAV policy") for a group of computers, you can exclude folders from on-access scanning. This option is not supported by Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 95/98/Me. 3.5 Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows NT 4.5 * When Sophos Anti-Virus is installed on a computer running German Windows NT, the Sophos Anti-Virus application is not shown in the Windows "Start" menu. 3.6 Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X 4.5 * No known issues 4 System requirements --------------------- 4.1 Sophos Enterprise Console Management server: Windows 2000 Server (Service Pack 3 or 4).
