Sophos Anti-Virus in maintenance phase
--------------------------------------

Sophos Anti-Virus for DOS/Windows 3.1x is now in a maintenance-only phase.
This means that feature development for this product has ended. The retirement
date is posted at www.sophos.com/support/timeline-os.html.


Installing and updating Sophos Anti-Virus for DOS/Windows 3.1x
--------------------------------------------------------------

These release notes describe the installation of Sophos Anti-Virus onto a
stand-alone workstation. If you are installing Sophos Anti-Virus onto a
networked workstation, please consult the Sophos Anti-Virus for DOS/Windows
3.1x user manual (\DOCS\ENG\MANUALS\DOS_MEN.PDF on the Sophos CD).

It is recommended that a minimum of 24 MB of RAM is available when running
SWEEP for DOS.

If installing from the CD, run INSTALL from the DOS directory on the CD. For
example, where D: is your CD drive type

  D:\DOS\INSTALL

Select 'Onto hard disk' from the Install menu and follow the instructions.

This procedure will install SWEEP on-demand virus detection.

Note: If you are using a floppy disk set, extract the data as instructed in
      the README.TXT on the first disk in the set, then go to the C:\SAVDOS
      directory and type

        INSTALL

      This procedure will install SWEEP on-demand virus detection.


On-demand virus detection
-------------------------

On-demand virus detection is available from DOS or from the MS-DOS box under
Windows 3.1x. Enter

  CD \SWEEP
  SWEEP

to start the command line scanner.

Archive file types scanned
--------------------------

Archives are not scanned by default. To enable archive scanning, use
-ARCHIVE (or switches for individual archive types e.g. -ZIP). Depending on
the number of archives present, scanning time may be increased.

The command line qualifier sweep -vv displays a list of the supported
archives, as well as the extension list and the available languages for this
version of Sophos Anti-Virus.

Note: To scan self-extracting archives of particular types use the -SFX
      switch as well as the archive type switch. e.g. SWEEP -SFX -ZIP. As
      -ARCHIVE includes -SFX all self-extractors the individual archive
      types are automatically scanned when -ARCHIVE is used. Otherwise
      self-extractors will be scanned as their executable type (e.g. Winzip
      self-extractor *.exe files will be scanned as *.exe files, not as
      *.zip files).

Scanning of InstallShield CAB files is not enabled by default. To enable
scanning of these files use -opt=(ISCabinet=ON) (NB ISCabinet is case-
sensitive).
