Sophos, a world leader in protecting businesses against viruses, Trojans, spyware and spam, has appointed industry veteran Fraser Howard as principal virus researcher. Based at Sophos's global headquarters, Howard will research new threats and drive product developments to counter new types of attacks against business.

Howard joins Sophos from McAfee where he managed anti-malware researchers across EMEA, directed research efforts, and analyzed emerging threats on the Windows 32 platform since 2000. A respected security expert, Howard was previously technical editor of Virus Bulletin magazine, the industry's leading publication dealing with the issue of viruses and associated malware.

Howard's particular areas of interest include heuristic and generic proactive methods of protecting against malware, and the automated processing of suspect code.

"Sophos's anti-virus engine and the technology behind it to defend against known and unknown threats has impressed me a great deal," said Fraser Howard, principal virus researcher at SophosLabs™, Sophos's global network of virus and spam research centers. "I'm very happy to join the experts at SophosLabs and play my part in helping protect businesses against existing and emerging threats."

Howard will work alongside SophosLabs' team of experts, based in UK, Australia, Canada, and US, who issue 24-hour protection in order to ensure customers' networks automatically detect and block new threats.

"Fraser Howard brings a wealth of experience to this important role inside the worldwide network of SophosLabs," said Mark Harris, global director of SophosLabs. "We're delighted to welcome him into the fold and we're certain that his expertise and proven dedication will help retain Sophos's position as a leading force in the fight against viruses, spyware, hackers and spam."
