Sophos talks security at LinuxWorld 2005 Security experts put threats into context at LinuxWorld London
Sophos, a world leader in protecting businesses against viruses, spyware and spam, will be showcasing its next generation security solutions for Linux at LinuxWorld London 2005, starting on 5 October at Olympia. Sophos's security experts will also be available throughout the exhibition to discuss the risks that insufficiently protected Linux systems can pose to business networks.
A recent Sophos survey revealed that 47% of respondents considered Linux and Unix to be the most secure operating systems available, whereas only 28% trusted Microsoft. However, protecting Linux servers is just as vital as protecting Windows PCs, since Linux systems are increasingly used to serve information in formats such as files or web pages to Windows clients. Although the majority of threats target Windows, they can use poorly protected Linux machines as a way into an organisation's network, which Sophos claims is a strong argument for security to be a prime focus at LinuxWorld.
Sophos will also be presenting on the growth of Linux penetration in the corporate market, as well as discussing the need for security companies to address the potential damage these systems can cause when left unprotected. The presentation will take place in the Product and Seminar Theatre on 5 October at 14:10.
"The idea that an unprotected Linux machine does not open a doorway to threats is completely unwarranted. With today's high-speed and sophisticated threats, it is vital that all entry points into an organisation's network are protected against attacks. Without protection, even threats designed for other operating systems, such as Windows, can reside on Linux machines," said John Shaw, senior product manager at Sophos. "Having multi-layered protection in place blocks all known threats regardless of who they are targeting or where they come from - email, internet, instant messaging, or other vectors."
