Sophos keeps viruses at bay for Australian coastguards

Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association Sophos Anti-Virus, one of the world's largest developers of corporate virus protection, has announced that its award-winning anti-virus software is being deployed by the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association (AVCGA) to protect its computer systems in 60 operational bases located throughout Australia.

The AVCGA's network provides vital support, co-ordination and back-up for over 147 radio bases, 89 rescue boats, 63 flotillas and 4 fixed wing aircraft. Sophos's best-of-breed virus protection technology and round the clock technical support ensure that the AVCGA's emergency communications remain free from virus threat.

"Up until now, we have had difficulty in establishing an effective anti-virus programme," said Chris Gillet, National Commodore for the AVCGA. "We are relied on 24 hours a day to keep the 20 thousand kilometres of Australian coastline safe. The integrity of our computers is vital to the efficiency of our operations and so we demand extremely high standards of round-the-clock anti-virus protection. We know we can always rely on Sophos Anti-Virus."

Sophos Anti-Virus is currently expanding its existing operations in Australia with a new virus laboratory situated in Sydney.

The Australian Volunteer Coastguard Association, staffed entirely by volunteers, was formed in 1961 to promote safety in the operation of small craft. Australia is the world's biggest island and 90% of the population live within 120km of the coast. The AVCGA monitors the marine distress frequencies and patrols the waterways assisting the public and responding to distress calls when they occur.
