“After considering several options, we chose Sophos because they are making a huge investment in schools. Education is not just an added extra for Sophos but they are putting the time, skills and resources into understanding the ins and outs of security in this sector.”

Business Challenge

In 1999, Knox first introduced an innovative program of technology and computer based learning. Since then, the school has placed an emphasis on digital learning and currently supports laptops for individual student use in years 5 -12. Middle school and senior school students are also given access to five desktop labs where they can access specialised computer and IT-related applications.

But just like any other school, Knox faced a range of security threats from malware including viruses that entered the school via emails attachments or storage devices, typically USBs brought in by students.

According to Mike Israel, IT Manager at Knox Grammar School, “Our last security system was memory intensive, not guaranteed to detect viruses and too difficult to manage. We were using a system that barely met our requirements.”

“We needed a reliable security program that protects our devices against the latest viruses and spam. With six full-time IT staff, our team is relatively small so we also had to ensure that the product that we chose requires minimal maintenance, is cost-effective and reliable."

Technology solution

To help meet the school’s security needs, Knox sought assistance from their education technology partner Computelec who have provided IT solutions for 11 years ranging from software licensing, one-to-one technology programs and hardware infrastructure solutions. The licensing specialists at Computelec worked closely with Mike Israel and based on the school’s requirements recommended two Sophos solutions to secure the School’s computer emails and endpoints.

“After considering several options, we chose Sophos because they are making a huge investment in schools. Education is not just an added extra for Sophos but they are putting the time, skills and resources into understanding the ins and outs of security in this sector,” said Israel

Sophos Email and Data Protection stops malicious emails from getting into the user’s inbox while preventing confidential information from leaking out. This was combined with Sophos Endpoint Security and Data Protection which protected the school’s devices from viruses, spyware, suspicious behavior and files, removable storage devices and unauthorised applications. With free, automatic updates to Sophos’ research labs, Knox could be assured that it was protected from the latest security threats as they appear.

Business Results

Since the Sophos solutions were implemented eighteen months ago, spam has been cut down to a bare minimum and there have been no major virus outbreaks to date. Demand for IT help has also reduced, freeing the IT team to support students and staff more proactively in the classrooms.

“As ICT teams in education usually run on a very lean budget, we rely on our technology partners and vendors to support us not only in providing solutions that are affordable but that are simple, effective and make our work easier. Since we’ve implemented Sophos, we no longer have to spend huge amounts of time maintaining our security. Sophos looks after itself,” said Israel.
