After an upgrade to SAV for Unix/Linux 9.3.1, Savscan produces 'Error: Unable to locate SavForLinux installation directory.'

Sophos Anti-Virus (SAV) for Linux/Unix version 9.3.1 includes a number changes to enhance security, when savscan is run from the terminal, it verifies that the installation is secure. If any one of these are set incorrectly then the following error will occur:

Error: Unable to locate SavForLinux installation directory.

A default installation of SAV for Linux/Unix will set this securely, this is also true for older versions of SAV for Linux (Version 6 upwards).

What To Do

Upon launching Savscan, SAV for Linux/Unix 9.3.1 (and above) performs the following security checks:

  1. Install directory (normally ../sophos-av/) owned by user 0 (root), group 0.
  2. ../sophos-av/bin/_/savscan exists.
  3. ../sophos-av/lib/sav/vdl01.vdb exists.
  4. ../sophos-av/engine/savscan.base exists.
  5. ../sophos-av/engine/savscan.base belongs to the sophosav group.
  6. ../sophos-av/engine/savscan.base has the SGID bit set.

If any of these points fail, you will be unable to launch savscan.
