Installing Sophos Anti-Virus updates on a Linux system with no network or internet connection

Note:  Emergency use only. If your endpoint computers are connecting to the network the automated updating procedures should be used.

Known to apply to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s)
SAV for Linux / UNIX v7
SAV for Linux / UNIX v9

Operating system
Linux/ Unix

What to do

Step 1. Find out which Sophos version you are using

  1. Run the command:
    • /opt/sophos-av/bin/savscan --version
  2. Make a note of the "Virus Data Version"
  3. Make a note of the "Total viruses (with IDEs)"

Step 2. Download the IDE files relevant to the version

  1. In a web browser, go to http://www.sophos.com/downloads/ide/index.html.
  2. Download the IDEs files for the version of "Virus Data Version" that you noted earlier. Select the ZIP file.

Step 3. Install the IDE files

  1. Remove the current IDEs:
    • rm /opt/sophos-av/lib/sav/*.ide
  2. Extract the IDEs zip file file into /opt/sophos-av/lib/sav.  For example:
    • cp <file> /opt/sophos-av/lib/sav/
    • cd /opt/sophos-av/lib/sav
    • unzip <file>
  3. Restart the sav-protect service:
    • sudo /etc/init.d/sav-protect restart
  4. The new IDEs should now be loaded

Step 4. Ensure that the IDEs have been installed

  1. Run the command:
    • /opt/sophos-av/bin/savscan --version
  2. You should note that the "Total viruses (with IDEs)" has increased.

Please note:

If the Virus Data Version is no longer listed on the Sophos IDEs website (step 2 above), you will need to need to download and install the latest version of the SAV for Linux product.  Each SAV for Linux product is only supported for 3 months.
