This article discusses the options available when migrating from Sophos Control Center 4.x to Enterprise Console 5.1 or later when running on an unsupported operating system.

Known to apply to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s)

Sophos Control Center
Enterprise Console 5.1.0

The options available to you are as follows, the option you choose will depend on a number of factors that are explained below.  Choosing the right option will result in the best upgrade experience.

  1. Perform a fresh installation of Enterprise Console on a new machine on your network with a new identity, e.g. new computer name, IP address, running a supported operating system. You can then re-protect your client machines from the new Enterprise Console installation or redirect the endpoints to the new server using article 116737

    This option is recommended if:
    • You have problems with your current installation of Control Center.
    • You have not extensively configured your policies and most options are the defaults.
    • You are not concerned with historical data.
Note: If required you can save reports in PDF format to retain previous reports for reference.  In addition to that, the existing server will also be available until you choose to decommission it or remove Control Center from the computer.
    • The computer your current installation of Control Center is no longer sufficiently resourced in terms of memory, disk I/O and could benefit from upgrading to support additional feature and roles.
    • You do not feel comfortable migrating Control Center to a new server.  The instructions to do so are referenced in option 3 below.  They are reasonable complex and on average take one hour to complete.

  2. Perform a fresh installation of Enterprise Console on a new machine on your network with the same identity, i.e., computer name and IP address, as the original management server but running a supported operating system.  Once Enterprise Console is installed on the new server, providing the same certificates are used for the new installation (see article 117463 to do this), the existing clients will start to appear in Enterprise Console. They can then be sorted into group and policies applied

  3. This option is recommended for the same reasons as option one, in addition:
    • You are unable to easily re-protect clients either by running a deployment task from Enterprise Console, running a script on each client.
    • You can take the current computer running Control Center offline whilst a new machine is added to the network with the same identity.

  4. Migrate your current Control Center installation to a new server running on a supported operating system, retaining previous data.  To do so, see article 117150.

  5. This option is recommended if
    • You have extensive configuration of your policy, including authorizations.
    • You require previous alert history.
    • You are comfortable working with batch files and SQL related tasks.
    • You have sufficient time available to perform the migration, as a minimum you should expect to spend one hour performing the migration.
