Question

Is it possible to encrypt a USB hard disk with SGE and move this external drive to another computer? The hard disk drives of both systems are already encrypted with SGE.

Answer

It is possible to use SafeGuard Easy for the encryption of an external USB hard disk. However, it is mandatory that this hard disk is present in the target system during the installation (and initial encryption) of SafeGuard Easy.

If you have a system where a hard disk already has been encrypted by SafeGuard Easy and you wish to add an external hard disk (no matter whether IDE, USB or other) at a later time, then the external hard disk cannot be encrypted.

In such a case, you need to uninstall SafeGuard Easy first, then add the external hard disk, then re-install SafeGuard Easy.

An exchange of this USB hard disk with other machines on which there is SafeGuard Easy installed is not possible. (Note that the SGE behavior for harddisks is different to that for removable media like USB memory sticks, which can well be exchanged between machines)

Hint: If you wish to protect data on an external disk drive, we highly recommend our product SafeGuard PrivateDisk.
