Issue
To solve probable BIOS issues on DELL Exx10 computers that our customers may be experiencing, Sophos has changed the way hotkeys must be applied at POA (Power on Authentication) level. This change is available with the release of SafeGuard Enterprise Device Encryption 5.50.1 and SafeGuard Easy 5.50.1.

This article applies to SafeGuard Enterprise and SafeGuard Easy installations versions 5.50.1 and above, which require a hotkey at POA level.

Technical background
A probable bug in the DELL BIOS prevents a timer call from being answered on time and therefore the POA is stuck. This call is used when waiting for possible hotkeys.

Known to apply to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s)
SafeGuard Enterprise Device Encryption 5.50.1
SafeGuard Easy 5.50.1

Operating System
All supported operating systems

What To Do

As of version 5.50.1 you must activate hotkey mode at POA level during the computer's "Power On Self Test" and before “SafeGuard Enterprise is loading” is displayed, as follows:

  1. Start the computer.
  2. Before the "Power On Self Test" (POST) has finished, you must press and hold the "Left Shift" key.
  3. When the message "Shift key has been pressed. Waiting for Hotkey..." is displayed, press the hotkey of your choice. Usually, you must press the required key within 5 seconds.

Example:

Sophos SafeGuard is starting.
Please wait.....

Shift key has been pressed. Waiting for Hotkey....

After pressing one of the hotkeys (F3, F4, F5, F6, F7, F9) a message is shown on the screen that confirms that the hotkey has been accepted. Only one hotkey can be activated for each reboot.

Example (in this case F9 was chosen):

Sophos SafeGuard is starting.
Please wait.....

Shift key has been pressed. Waiting for Hotkey....

The available hotkeys are the same as in previous versions. More details on POA hotkeys and the possible deployment scenarios can be found in the knowledgebase article Hotkeys and the POA.
