Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux: a 3rd party application fails when RMS binds to an ephemeral port

  • ID de l'article 116721
  • Mis à jour : 01 févr. 2013

When RMS binds to an adapter, it randomly selects one of the ephemeral ports from the list of available ports. Some 3rd party applications are hard coded to a particular ephemeral port and if RMS binds to that port prior to the 3rd party application, then the 3rd party application would fail to work.

Issue

A 3rd party application fails to work under the following circumstances. When Remote Management System (RMS) binds, the operating system selects an ephemeral port from the pool of available ephemeral ports. Some 3rd party applications are hard coded to a particular port within this range. If RMS binds to that port prior to the 3rd party application, then the 3rd party application would fail to work.

What to Do

Refer to your operating system documentation on how to define a list of ephemeral ports that can be used.  For example, on most destributions the following can be set /etc/sysctl.conf:
net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range = <first port> <last port>
