Cause

Incorrect permissions on a file(s) in the SYS folder or a file in that folder is locked open.

What To Do

  1. Browse to:
    • Vista+: C:\ProgramData\Sophos\Update Manager\Update Manager\
    • XP/2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sophos\Update Manager\Update Manager\
  2. Check that the permissions on this folder (and its sub-folders) have at least the following:
    Administrators: Full Control
    Authenticated Users: Read & Execute
[Account used by endpoints to update, i.e., 'SophosUpdateMgr']: Read & Execute
    SYSTEM: Full Control
    Users: Read & Execute
  3. Force the SUM to update from within the console (On the update managers view, right-click the SUM and click 'Update now').

If the problem continues go through the following steps below to recreate the 'sys' folder.

Note: In the steps below the folder browsed to is 'CIDs\S055' because the error in the trace logs (see beginning of the article) references that subscription folder.  Check your SUM trace logs for the exact folder you should browse to.

  1. Browse to:
    • Vista+: C:\ProgramData\Sophos\Update Manager\Update Manager\CIDs\S055
    • Xp/2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sophos\Update Manager\Update Manager\CIDs\S055
  2. Rename the 'sys' folder to 'sys.old'.
  3. Force the SUM to update from within the console.

After a successful update you can delete the sys.old folder.
